Broanmain Plastics and Fireco

Our Customer

Technical injection moulding firm Broanmain Plastics and compliance fire safety specialist Fireco have collaborated on a new fire-compliant magnetic door device for healthcare, residential, education, leisure hospitality and industrial facilities.

Overview

Fireco’s innovative new fire-compliant magnetic door device, the radio-activated DorMag Pro, is designed to hold fire doors open to improve access and building ventilation, yet close automatically when a fire or intruder alarm is activated.

The customer called for a sleek-looking, timeless finish with exacting performance. Integral to the high-spec design aesthetics is a metallic-looking silver band wrapping around the device’s wall-mounted housing.

The Challenge

As the DorMag Pro is radio activated, the strip needed to be made of non-metallic material. To meet these design aspirations, Fireco and Broanmain requested our decorative expertise. ACT provided a solution that combined aesthetics and durability, while adhering to the specific needs of the radio-activated device.

“Achieving a professional-looking silver band finish on every plastic housing unit was one of the main deal-breakers in our DorMag Pro project plan,” comments Fireco Product Design Engineer Matt Ball.

The Solution

First off, we needed to find the right colour. Working with our trusted paint suppliers, ACT used a colour sample from Fireco’s design brief and successfully created a tint that was an exact match.

A product of this nature is exposed to an array of environmental factors. ACT reviewed the rules on functionality, combining colour and durability to deliver a bespoke finish that ticks all the boxes.

Outcome

Primed and productionised for large scale manufacturing, the DorMag Pro presents a unique sleek design and revolutionary technology, blending aesthetics with critical safety features.

As well as mass-moulding the seven components, Broanmain Plastics undertakes some of the specialist finishing tasks, including heat staking a metal clip onto the battery carrier and overseeing the paint finish. Fireco assembles all the internal components, including fitting magnets and the PCBs in-house. Every element is moulded by Broanmain Plastics with absolute precision to meet the tight tolerances.
